As I was leaving Bonita last night, I received a phone call to get over to the County Parks land across from the Starbucks at the corner of Bonita Road and Central Avenue. My friend Sandy had a man she wanted me to meet.
As I pulled my truck over to park on the side of the road, Sandy—with her two dogs—happily greeted me and I noticed that Channel 10News was already there. And then I saw three mules tied to the wood-rail fence, just standing as patiently as could be near the busy intersection. I managed to get this one photo before my cell phone decided to call it a day.
Hunkered over a makeshift campfire stove was a weathered, modern-day cowboy, cooking a pot of brown rice for his supper. A small crowd had gathered to watch the unusual sight of "Mule" and his three equine companions. Channel 10 interviewed him on camera for some time which was then shown on the 11pm news. John McDonald, from Los Angeles, was also filming for a documentary he was doing on Mule. He commutes in periodically to film for a few days as Mule travels by mule pack across the trails of America.
Mule has been living this nomadic life for twenty-nine years, traveling as far north as Montana and as far east as Arkansas. Just a man and his mules like something out of the past, a cowboy living off the land and a few bucks offered by curious onlookers.
Bonita locals, Krystal and her mom Graciela, were there and Krystal was excited to see Mule in-person in her hometown. She has been following him on his facebook page Three Mules. I guess there's a little modern-day cowboy thrown into the formula.
The County Parks patrol showed up and told Mule that he could stay in the campgrounds at Sweetwater Summit but he couldn't just camp along the road. No open fires or camping without a permit are allowed. Mule just ignored him. I offered to help him move his mules deeper into the terrain where he wasn't so visible and he nodded but never moved to action. The Parks weren't trying to make trouble for him but when Mule got defiant, it became an issue of putting their own jobs at risk. They had taken an oath to protect the park and they needed to just do their job, no matter how they personally felt about it. I guess Mule has collected some tickets along the way and a Coronado attorney (who's name I will keep private) is defending him on his most recent ticket from Vista Water Authority.
My last discussion with Mule was short. He's a man of few words. I let him know that the Park Supervisor had been notified and had no choice but to call the Sheriff's deputies. Once they arrived, his mules could be taken from him and put in the County of San Diego Animal Services. Mule said he'd pack up the mules so he could move on.
Seeing Mule made me think about our changing world. One hundred years ago, Mule wouldn't have received even a second look. Now there are laws against spending the night out in the open without paying a fee. Cowboys-of-the-past have been corraled in, much like the American Indian was restricted to a reservation. Now that I know about Mule and his travels, I'll be keeping my eyes open for him and maybe he'll pass through my life again.

With thunderous booms, the monstrous South Bay Power Plant crumbled into history, following a successful implosion along the Chula Vista bayfront on the morning of Saturday, February 2, 2013.
Just after 7 a.m., strategically placed charges brought the mammoth structure down before a crowd of thousands of residents, elected officials and the media.
For the first time since the late 1950's, Chula Vista has an open view to South San Diego Bay. The land can now be used for future parks, as designated by the Port of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista as part of the Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan.
The plant's implosion, facilitated by Dynegy South Bay, is an essential step toward redeveloping formerly industrial bayfront land.
The power plant site is a portion of the award-winning Chula Vista Bayfront Master Plan, a shovel-ready land-use plan that will guide the transformation of more than 500 acres of waterfront property. The plan lays out a future world-class resort and conference destination, complemented by a mix of residential, retail, and more than 240 acres of parks and nature preserve.
The project is expected to generate about 21,000 tons of recyclable metals and up to 3,400 tons of other non-hazardous waste, which will be recycled and salvaged when feasible.

Thanks to Chuck Perkins of Haole-Okole Photography for these incredible images.
The Sweethearts of Swing will be at the Musician's Union Hall in San Diego this Saturday. Watching them is like stepping back in time and watching the Andrew Sisters. They are very talented and a lot of fun to watch!
You might remember them from March 28th, 2009 when they performed for the Centennial Celebration of the Spreckels Library in Coronado.
