SAN DIEGO (May 24, 2013) – Naval Base Coronado will receive the Military Conservation Partner Award on Wednesday, May 29, 2013, for their efforts in caring for the species and lands entrusted to their care. NBC is home to more than 18,000 active duty military and more than 5,500 civilian employees and its natural resources program manages some of the most diverse ecosystems in the continental United States.
In 2004, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Fisheries and Habitat Conservation created this award for a military installation that has accomplished outstanding work in cooperation with the Service to promote conservation on military lands during the past year.
The eight NBC installations represent more than 60,000 acres of land and water in San Diego and Los Angeles Counties in Southern California.
"Naval Base Coronado takes environmental stewardship very seriously,” said Capt. Gary Mayes, NBC commanding officer. “We understand there is a fine balance between conducting operations while protecting numerous species of plant and animal entrusted to our care."
