Wire installed on Coronado Bridge barrier. Photo by Susan Heavilin
Have you noticed a new addition on the Coronado Bridge this week? CalTrans is installing a wire above the outer cement barrier on both sides of the bridge. I am so happy to see this improvement and hope that it will be a strong deterrent to stop future jumpers.
I hope you'll overlook my commonsensical and entirely too pessimistic take on this "improvement" but how on earth is a 5/8 inch steel cable strung in that manner going to be any sort of a "deterrent" to those intent on jumping off the bridge? Is that REALLY what that's for? I assumed it was for some sort of maintenance project....

Wishful thinking I guess. Someone told me today they thought it was for the light project.

The steel cable is just something for the potential jumper to hang on to. I don't think it is a deterrent.

Folks, that's a safety line for scaffolding...such as used for painting.
