Several bike theft arrests have been made over the last few weeks with the assistance of the public. The Coronado Police Department reminds all residents and visitors to use U-locks to secure your bikes and never leave a bike unlocked in public or in your yard. Bike locks that cannot be cut with hand tools are more secure. Don't leave bikes in public areas overnight. Report your bike theft immediately when you realize it is stolen. The sooner a theft is reported the better chance of recovery. Most of all, people should call the Police Department at (619) 522-7350 when they see someone suspicious lurking around areas where bikes are parked.

I read where there is an electronic gadget that can be placed into the bicycle handlebar. When actuated and the bicycle is stolen, it can be traced to its location (maybe a warehouse full of Coronado bicycles?). I am sure the PD has these staked out in places, and also cameras in the 600 block of D Avenue where most of the bicycles are stolen, so they can catch the bicycle thieves? OH!! Is that their job? They never thought of that!

They (the Coronado Police Department) did think of that.
Here's the relevant quote from the link below:
"The CPD also strongly encourages residents to register their bikes in case their bike is recovered. In an effort to catch bike thieves, the CPD will be launching a bait bike operation where bikes will be set out in public places with hidden GPS devices. When the bikes are stolen and start "moving", the CPD will be there to make the arrest."
