This Magnolia grandiflora is on Coronado's Approved Street Tree List.
Coronado was once an island covered in shrubs, native grasses, and small trees. The developers of Coronado, Babcock and Story, laid out the town and were quick to plant trees throughout the public right of ways and in the parks. We now enjoy the results of this early planning. Today Public Services maintain the trees in our public places, which include street trees, parks and the golf course.
The citizen participation in this effort is conducted by the Street Tree Committee, a five member board, which meets once a month and reviews requests for tree removals and other issues pertaining to street trees. The STC works in tandem with the director of Trees and Parks, Ricky Fernandez.
Over the years, the STC has assisted the City of Coronado in developing a Tree Master Plan. This document has recently been updated and revised and was approved by the City Council on August 16, 2011.
The Tree Master Plan will provide you with extensive information about trees in all our public places, including a brief history, approved street tree list, a request for removals, photos and descriptions of most street trees and the municipal code pertaining to trees on the public right-of-way areas. A new category included in the plan is the Heritage Tree Program.
The Heritage Tree Program was developed to preserve trees on private property. During the past twenty years many lots have been scrapped without any regard to the significant trees that have been on these lots. As a result we have lost a large amount of tree canopy and biomass in our city. In an effort to preserve significant species and protect trees on private property, a home owner can now apply for a Heritage Tree designation. If you are interested in designating a tree on your property, view guidelines of the Heritage Tree program to see if your tree will qualify. We hope this effort will raise awareness of the value of trees in our community and help to preserve the last of the magnificent trees left on private property.
The next time you have any questions about street trees, take a moment to check out the information in the Tree Master Plan. Any person interested in participating on the Street Tree Committee may apply through the City of Coronado.
