The Coronado City Council held a Special Meeting yesterday at 3pm at the Coronado Community Center to discuss traffic. Approximately 50 people attended. It is unfortunate that they just didn’t hold it in the regular Council Chambers so it could have been televised for the entire community to be able to passively participate in this important topic for our fair city. With that said, it was an excellent meeting of the minds and gave one hope of a sensible traffic solution for the future.
This was the first post-tunnel traffic discussion since the tunnel was defeated, and inspired new innovative ideas to focus on real traffic solutions.
First City Manager Blair King addressed the audience, using a Power Point Presentation and discussing:
• The four areas for discussion and action
• The proposed traffic and circulation policy, goal and objectives
• The town meeting of September 8, 2010 and
• The suggestions and input from that meeting.
Mr. King’s presentation was followed by Director of Engineering Ed Walton, who continued with the presentation and explained:
• The status of current traffic and circulation initiatives
• The use of
• Bulb-outs
• Commuter ferry service
• Rapid bus
• Future planned Capital Projects and
• Other congestion relief working group recommendations
The meeting was then opened for Public Comment and about ten residents approached the microphone. Our community is fortunate to be rich in individuals with varied and resourceful backgrounds. Their comments ranged from outside-the-box to very basic “Why didn’t we think of that?” ideas. The community input provided the Council with new and creative alternatives.
A new commission is in the works. It will be called the Coronado Transportation Commission (CTC) and will consist of seven members. Three of those members will reside in the Village, one in the Shores, one in the Cays and the remaining two at large. If you are interested in applying for this commission, please contact the City Clerk Linda Hascup at 619.522.7320.
