Does This Picture Look Familiar?

 

Chicago General Manager of Fleishman-Hillard is back in the midwest but has a framed Coronado picture hanging in her office. You can take the girl out of Coronado but it seems you can't take Coronado out of the girl.

 

 

(Maxine) "Winer said "everything I've done until now has brought me to this place." The now-Deerfield resident lived in San Diego from 1985 to 1993, and although she treasured her time there and keeps a framed photo of Coronado Beach above the suede taupe sofa in her office, she prefers the Midwest."

A New Twist On Dog Walking

 

 

Okay all you dog walkers out there. Besides spending time with your "best friend", chatting with all the neighbors you run into, and just enjoying the beauty of Coronado . . . I've found something else to inspire those early morning walks.

 

Amy Gallo wrote an article for Self magazine titled "Get Fit With Fido." It was full of creative ideas to take your dog walking to a whole new level. Here are just a few:

 

 Play with pace. Kick up the cardio by adding intervals, says Robert Kushner, M.D., coauthor of Fitness Unleashed! A Dog and Owner's Guide to Losing Weight and Gaining Health Together (Three Rivers Press). Use street signs as markers to vary your clip, or alternate between 10 minutes of brisk walking and 5 minutes of jogging.

Flatten your pooch. Brace against leash tugging and tighten your tummy: Keeping torso upright with shoulders back, engage abs for five strides, then relax them for five strides. Repeat until you're back at your front door, says Torri Shack, a trainer in Los Angeles. Hello, (bow)wow abs!

Retrieve results. Spike your calorie burn with sprints: Chuck a ball as far as you can, then race your dog to snag it, says Rebecca Johnson, director of the Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction. Repeat, crisscrossing sideways in a grapevine motion or running backward until you're both dog-tired.

 

So go get that leash and get going!

"American Idol" Sends Message To Chargers

 

"When Chula Vista singing sensation Jessica Sanchez, 16, one of 13 'American Idol' finalists, competed in Wednesday’s episode, she was the only performer given a standing ovation by the judges. 'They’re going to have to pay you the next time you sing the national anthem for the Chargers,' quipped judge and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler.

 

Jessica has sung the anthem twice for the San Diego Chargers: on Sept. 2, 2008 (at age 13) and on Oct. 3, 2010. 'It would be great to have her back,' said Chargers spokesman Bill Johnston."

Seven Days of the Week

The days of the week are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Where did these names come from?

Monday: Old English meaning "Moon's Day".

Tuesday: Old English meaning "Tiw's day." Tiw was a one-handed god associated with single combat and pledges in Norse mythology.

Wednesday: Old English meaning the day of the Germanic god Wodan and a prominent god of the Anglo-Saxons in England until about the seventh century.

Thursday: Old English Þunor's day. Þunor is commonly known in Modern English as Thor, the god of thunder.

 
Friday: Old English meaning the day of the Anglo-Saxon goddess Fríge.

Saturday: the only day of the week to retain its Roman origin in English, named after the Roman god Saturn associated with the Titan Cronus, father of Zeus and many Olympians.

Sunday: Old English meaning "Sun's Day".

 

Now that we've got that one figured out, we can all rest a little easier, right? Who knew that there was an explanation for the names of the days of the week?

Big Brother May Be Closer Than We Thought

 

When we moved into the 21st century eleven years ago, many of us gladly embraced technology and social networking and the ease it added to our lives. We no longer needed an encyclopedia or dictionary, every bit of information could be instantly at our fingertips with the use of Google. People we had lost through the years of living our lives were finding us on Facebook. Pocket calendars and address books were no longer needed because that information could be stored in our phones. We could communicate quickly through email and save the cost of a stamp and envelope. We could even pay all our bills online in one fell swoop.

 

Now that we've become accustomed to this immediate gratification of our wants and needs, things are changing again.

 

Google users have been getting emails telling them that new policies will be put in place in March. Users cannot "opt out". These new policies promise to make their lives easier.

"We're getting rid of over 60 different privacy policies across Google and replacing them with one that's a lot shorter and easier to read. Our new policy covers multiple products and features, reflecting our desire to create one beautifully simple and intuitive experience across Google."

Boston Herald journalist Raakhee Mirchandani wrote, "Instead of keeping separate vats of information for each of its products, Google will now allow them to cross-pollinate, creating a complete picture of who you are, what you read, where you’re going and what you’re up to."

 

According to "Social apps 'harvest smartphone contacts' " published on yesterday's BBC Mobile News Technology website:

"Twitter has admitted copying entire address books from smartphones and storing the data on its servers, often without customers' knowledge.

Access to the address book is enabled when users click on the "Find Friends" feature on smartphone apps."

Times are changing. You don't need to be paranoid but should be curious as to who's collecting this data? And why? And who's guarding it? And just how secure are our "secure sites" like bank accounts and the like? The computer's smart enough to match us up with our passwords and allow us access to our accounts. Surely, that information stored in computer banks could be accessed by someone other than ourselves. With identify theft rampant, have we set ourselves up by being lured into a trap that has firmly ensnared us in its jagged teeth?

It goes without saying that it's probably a little late to go back and try to erase our information from the vastness we know as the internet. Like a word spoken in anger, once released you may never get it back. Suddenly pencil and paper and stashing your cash in your mattress are beginning to sound like not such bad ideas. Just something to be aware of and think about.

Give The Gift Of Genuine Concern This Christmas

 

A Common Sense reader sent the following information with the comment "worth posting on Coronado Common Sense". Well, Coronado Common Sense thought that we could all benefit from some new gift giving ideas so here it is!

 

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition  

 

"As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods —merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. 

 

This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans.  There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Oh Yes there is!  It is time to think outside the box, people.  Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?  

 

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut.  How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?  

 

Gym membership?  It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.  

 

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed?  Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.  

 

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamins on a Chinese-made flat-screen TV?  Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.  

 

There are a gazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates.  And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.  

 

Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.  

 

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?  

 

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom?  Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.  

 

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.  

 

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves.  They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.  

 

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip.  

 

And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.  Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.  

 

Honestly people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house?  When you buy a five dollar string of lights, about fifty cents stays in the community.

 

If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.  

 

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US (We the People), encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams.  And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we could not imagine.  

 

THIS is the new American Christmas tradition!!"
