GUAM (May 22, 2012) Vice Adm. Matthew L. Nathan, the U.S. Navy Surgeon General and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, offers the traditional handshake giving Yeoman 2nd Class Cecilia Mitchell a coin on the mess decks of the Military Sealift Command hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19). Nathan leads a global healthcare network of 63,000 Navy medical personnel around the world who provide high-quality health care to more than one million eligible beneficiaries. Navy Medicine personnel deploy with Sailors and Marines worldwide, providing critical mission support aboard ship, in air, under the sea and on the battlefield. Discovery Of First Orchid That Only Blooms At Night

All these years while we lay asleep in our beds, something amazing was taking place and we had no idea. An orchid species was flowering in the dark of night on New Britain, an island near Papua New Guinea. The unusual discovery was made by a Dutch researcher on an expedition to the world's 38th largest island. New Britain covers 14,100 square miles and was largely formed by volcanic processes, with several still being active.

 

The Bulbophyllum Nocturnum is the only-known orchid to flower consistantly and only at night.

Japan On The Mend

A little more than seven months ago, the northeast coast of Japan was rocked by a massive earthquake and then devasted by the tsunami that followed. A Common Sense reader sent in this photo blog of Japan after it stopped rocking and rolling. Photos were taken at impact, three months later and then six months later.

Secret To Longevity Finally Revealed

 

Fauja Singh, World's Oldest Marathon Runner

A hundred-year-old man just completed a marathon race in Toronto, Canada. His run time was 08:25:16 . . . it gets better. He took up running just eleven years ago (when he was 89) after his wife and son passed away and running helped him work through his depression. It was his goal to be the "world's oldest marathon runner" and Fauja Singh achieved just that.

 

His secret for longevity?

 

Mr Singh answered "The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free. Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling and keep running."

New Biography On Vincent Van Gogh Claims His Suicide Was Actually A Murder

 

"Vincent Van Gogh did not kill himself, the authors of new biography Van Gogh: The Life have claimed.

Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith say that, contrary to popular belief, it was more likely he was shot accidentally by two boys he knew who had 'a malfunctioning gun'.

Dutch master Van Gogh died in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, in 1890 aged 37.

The authors came to their conclusion after 10 years of study with more than 20 translators and researchers.

They said thousands of previously untranslated letters written by the artist were among documents studied to create a research database containing 28,000 notes."

"Message In A Bottle" Receives A Response . . . Again And Again

 

 

Since 1996, a man has been tossing bottles off a cliff on Prince Edward Island, Canada's smallest province along the Atlantic coastline. Harold Hackett has thrown over 4,800 bottles into the sea, each with the same message, tell me where you found it. And surprisingly many have responded, by post, decades after the original message was launched. Over 3,100 of them!

I'm a sucker for a happy ending. So if you write a message, stuff it into a bottle and throw it into the sea, it really will surface someday. Not as quickly as "snail mail" but it still gets the job done . . . eventually.

Osama bin Laden Dead

 

A Common Sense reader sent in the following news flash late last night in case you missed it:

"(CNN) -- Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil, is dead, officials said -- almost 10 years after the attacks that killed about 3,000 people.

The founder and leader of al Qaeda was killed by U.S. forces Monday in a mansion in Abbottabad, north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad, along with other family members, a senior U.S. official told CNN.

In an address to the nation Sunday night, U.S. President Barack Obama called bin Laden's death 'the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda.'

'Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan,' Obama said. 'A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.' "

The Salzburg Statement on Shared Decision Making

 

We call on clinicians to:

 

• Recognize that they have an ethical imperative to share important decisions with patients

 

• Stimulate a two-way flow of information and encourage patients to ask questions, explain their circumstances, and express their personal preferences

 

• Provide accurate information about options and the uncertainties, benefits, and harms of treatment in line with best practice for risk communication

 

• Tailor information to individual patient needs and allow them sufficient time to consider their options

 

• Acknowledge that most decisions do not have to be taken immediately, and give patients and their families the resources and help to reach decisions.

 

We call on clinicians, researchers, editors, journalists, and others to:

 

• Ensure that the information they provide is clear, evidence-based, and up to date and that conflicts of interest are declared.

 

We call on patients to:

 

• Speak up about their concerns, questions, and what’s important to them

 

• Recognize that they have a right to be equal participants in their care

 

• Seek and use high-quality health information.

 

We call on policymakers to:

 

• Adopt policies that encourage shared decision-making, including its measurement, as a stimulus for improvement

 

• Amend informed consent laws to support the development of skills and tools for shared decision making.

 

Why?

 

Much of the care patients receive is based on the ability and readiness of individual clinicians to provide it, rather than on widely agreed standards of best practice or patients preferences for treatment.

 

Clinicians are often slow to recognize the extent to which patients’ wish to be involved in understanding their health problems, in knowing the options available to them, and in making decisions that take account of their personal preferences.

 

Many patients and their families find it difficult to take an active part in healthcare decisions. Some lack the confidence to question health professionals. Many have only a limited understanding about health and its determinants and do not know where to find information that is clear, trustworthy, and easy to understand.
