(1) An Introduction to Ikebana Arrangements of the Ichiyo School of Ikebana
Instructor Deborah Warriner will present an overview of the history of Japanese flower arranging, the differences between Western flower arranging and ikebana, and introduction to two basic styles of moribana (low container) arrangements. Students will create several variations of both “upright” and “slanting” style ikebana arrangements. Each student should bring floral scissors, a plastic table covering, a notebook, and camera to help them record their creations. They will receive a lesson sheet and floral materials; moribana containers and kenzans (pin-holders) will be provided for use in the class.

Helping you to make better plant/garden portraits is the goal of this class. The class begins with a session of your photo submissions that are anonymously discussed to provide examples of the concepts to follow. Also included will be a power-point instructional aid and a practice session outside. Topics will include the mechanics of cameras, how to recognize light quality and control it, compositional “rules”, effective use of line and contrast, inexpensive gadgets, and tricks of the trade. Students are asked to bring their camera to class. At least seven days before class, please send the instructor an 8 by 10 format image with a high resolution to frenchfoto@cox.net. Images will be discussed with the utmost anonymity and are for instructional purposes only.

(3) Make Lasting Art From Your Garden
Use plant material from your garden to create lasting art suitable for hanging or reproduction to card or calendar format. Instruction will include how-to collage, color theory, composition, and assistance during the work session. No prior art experience required. Most supplies provided. Students should bring pressed flat, dried flowers and leaves, scissors, watercolor paper or canvas 11” by 14” or 16” by 20” and any acrylic paints they have. The instructor will provide some dried flowers and leaves for students use and other necessary materials. Plan to come and learn something new and have FUN!
