Susan,
At your request, here's a photo of the rudimentary tool I found on the alley side of our back gate recently. Residents may recognize this as the kind of tool a gardener uses to unlatch gates on properties where he's permitted to work. My excellent gardener has no cause to use, and does not in fact use, any such tool to unlatch our back gate because it remains locked at all times. Our gardener has no cause to go into our alley, nor does he in fact, go into our alley in the performance of his job. As our Coronado Police Chief Lou Scanlon explained during our SPEAK OUT CORONADO town hall meeting on strengthening our island through Neighborhood Watch, criminals are smart enough to use these tools, too.
I encourage residents to be alert to their surroundings and if they find potential evidence of thwarted criminal activity, then let our Men and Women in Blue know. Citizens may help others by communicating facts to our Police Department that might deter future criminal activity.
Respectfully,
Barbara Denny
Coronado City Councilwoman
Thank you Ms. Denny for your letter and photo. I wanted the Coronado residents to know that this type of activity was going on in our neighborhoods. And to remind them of the importance of keeping your gates locked!
I will be writing an article soon about your recent SPEAK OUT CORONADO addressing the use of Neighborhood Watch. There were nearly 70 people in attendance and a general concern about rising crime in Coronado. Thank you for holding these community meetings where the residents can ask questions and voice their concerns.
