CORONADO, CA (January 25, 2012) – The City of Coronado hopes a new piece of public art by actor-artist Daniel Stern installed Tuesday at the Coronado Community Center will provoke a sense of fun, surprise and good cheer for residents and visitors.
City Council members approved the temporary installation of the piece, titled “Handstand,” on December 20, 2011. The sculpture is a man in a suit and hat standing on one hand. After reviewing alternate sites, council members agreed with the Arts Commission’s initial recommendation of the Community Center location.
Stern, who may be best known for his role in the movie “Home Alone,” continues to act but has created many sculptures that have been exhibited around California. Before Coronado, “Handstand” was part of the San Diego Unified Port District’s Urban Trees art program.
The 8-foot-tall bronze sculpture is mounted on top of a 12-foot-tall wall at 1845 Strand Way. Stern is not charging the City for the loan of the artwork. It will remain up for one year.
About the statue, Stern has said he hopes people see the artwork and “get a feeling of motion, joy, color, chaos, balance, humor, danger, possibilities and impossibilities.”
