
Capt. Ralph J. Baum, a 54 year resident of Coronado, passed away peacefully in his home on the morning of Dec. 19th. This Leavenworth, Kansas boy received an appointment to the Naval Academy in 1931. Upon graduation in 1935, he began the first assignment among an impressive number of ships and stations, some of whose names are forever written the pages of Naval History. These include the USS Colorado; USS Dent; USS Chester; USS Swasey; USS Sigourney; USS Philadelphia; USS Corry; USS Stanly; USS Paul Hamilton; USS The Sullivans; NROTC, University of Kansas; USS Boxer; U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland; USS Baltimore; Armed Forces Staff College, Leavenworth Kansas; USS Ajax; and Service School Command, U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, California.
The Silver Star was awarded to him twice for his leadership in escorting the USS Houston from Formosa and the USS Halsey Powell which was disabled by Kamikaze. In 1945 he was awarded a Commendation Ribbon with a combat "V" for picking up survivors from the USS Bunker Hill off Okinawa. In addition he received the American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 6 Stars; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal with European Clasp; National Defense Service Defense Medal; Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation; and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Stars.
After retiring from the Navy, he worked for General Dynamics in San Diego and in Boston. Tired of being away from his family, he became a Building Inspector for the City of Coronado where he reviewed and approved some of the Coronado Shores buildings.
When he finally retired, he played tennis several times a week, performed "honey-do" projects and participated in "the" Sunday morning bike ride that always ended up at the Mexican Village for breakfast.
He was preceded in death by his wife Katie (10/25/15 – 02/27/11). He is survived by his 4 children, Tajie Major of Palos Verdes Estates, CA, Simmi Baum of Coronado, CA, Nikki Cummings of Las Cruces, NM, and Ralph Baum of Chula Vista, CA, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A grave-side service will be performed by Pastor David H. McElrath at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, 3838 Bonita Rd, Bonita, CA 91902, on January 7, 2012 at 2:30 PM and a reception immediately following at 4:30 PM at 1101 First St, #106 in Coronado.
