County Animal Control Officers Graduate

 

County Animal Control Officer Melissa Prettyman works with an opossum as part of an academy training presented by Project Wildlife.

Ten new animal control officers are on the job after a Friday training academy graduation in which they received badges, swore a solemn oath of office, and absorbed the pragmatic yet inspirational counsel of Animal Services Director Dawn Danielson.

County animal control officers train to handle a variety of animals.

 

“You have a tough job ahead of you... we expect you basically to be super-human,” Danielson told the graduates, who wore the neat khaki uniform of the County’s animal control officers.

 

In a room at the County Administration Center packed with about 60 of the graduates’ family members, Danielson detailed the difficult realities of the job.

 

This little piggie cried "wee-wee-wee" all the way home.

Animal control officers are charged with responding to new calls, educating the public on and enforcing animal-related laws, helping animals in danger, investigating criminal animal cruelty or neglect cases and more... all at the same time.

Update For Proposed Walgreens Drugstore In Coronado

 

Coronado Common Sense received an email from City of Coronado Associate Planner Peter Fait. Mr. Fait wrote to say that the original photo shown here yesterday of the proposed Walgreens store was not approved by the Design Review Commission. A revision was presented to the DRC at their September 28th meeting. The new design looks like this:

Not Everyone Is Happy With The Idea Of A Walgreens In Coronado

A Common Sense reader has just informed Coronado Common Sense that a petition is circulating to oppose the new Walgreens that is currently going through the Planning Commission.

 

The petition states "We, the undersigned, opposed Walgreens in Coronado for a variety of reasons."

Here is the fact sheet—associated with the petition—for those who want more information:

 

"It is important to oppose Walgreens in Coronado for various reasons including, but not limited to, the following facts:

(1) Walgreens' predatory business plan will wreck our local economy because it will put many local stores out of business, put many employees out of work, reduce overall tax revenue and increase the number of vacant storefronts in Coronado.

(2) Walgreens big box store is wrong for Coronado because it will increase parking and traffic problems.

(3) Walgreens strip mall-like store design plan offends our business district because the design diminishes our unique village atmosphere.

 

(4) Embroiled in a bitter legal dispute captioned Express Scripts Inc. (ESRX) v. Walgreen Co., 1:11-cv-06223, U.S. District court, Northern District of Illinois (Chicago), Walgreens is hostile to Military Families and Seniors because according to court documents, as well as military and business news services, Walgreens representatives openly stated that Walgreens will refuse to accept Tricare and Medicare Part D medical insurance after December 31, 2011.

Planning Commission To Consider Walgreens Drugstore In Coronado At Today's Meeting

 

Walgreens Drugstore is requesting approval of a Minor Special Use Permit and Coastal Permit to operate a formula business at 925 Orange Avenue. This is a public hearing and the public is invited to attend.

 

A Little Birdie Told Me . . .

 

. . . that talk show host "Dr. Phil" McGraw has offered the fee to exhume the grave of Rebecca Zahau in Missouri. This would be for the purpose of reexaming the body for the possible evidence of foul play and to satisfy the concerns of Rebecca's family. The death of Ms. Zahau at the Spreckels Mansion on Ocean Avenue has been declared a suicide.

Coronado Design Review Commission To Consider Two New Art Sculptures Tomorrow

 

Two new art sculptures are to be considered for placement, "Sea Level" at the Boat House/Club site and "Handstand" in front of the Community Center. Both sculptures would be on loan but a price of $8,750 is given for future purchase of "Sea Level".
