Surfing Dogs Raise More Than $100K To Help Orphaned Animals

 

Ventura-Based Surf Dog Wins Top Honors

 

Surf Dog "Buddy" has won five of the six Surf Dog Surf-A-Thons and became the first inductee into the Surf Dog Hall of Fame.

DEL MAR, Calif., Sept. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Helen Woodward Animal Center announced today that more than $100,000 was raised during the sixth annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon presented by Eukanuba. The event, which was held in Del Mar, is the largest surfing dog competition in the nation. Eighty dogs competed but only one was named “top dog” Surf Dog Buddy from Ventura. Buddy, who has won five of the six Surf Dog Surf-A-Thons also became the first inductee into the Surf Dog Hall of Fame.

 

Bruce Hooker, Buddy’s owner, spoke during the Hall of Fame Ceremony stating that today was most likely the last race for the 14-year-old Jack Russell Terrier. “That last heat was probably the best of Buddy’s life,” said Hooker, who went on to say, “Helen Woodward Animal Center hosts the best Surf Dog Competition and we are so proud to represent.”

Community Invited To Naval Base Coronado's Beach Clean-up, Friday, September 30, 2011 At 7:30 AM

 

NAVAL BASE CORONADO, Calif. -- Naval Base Coronado will be hosting a shoreline beach clean-up at the South Silver Strand Training Complex Friday, Sep. 30 gathering at 7:30 a.m., and YOU are invited!  Clean-up efforts will begin at 8:00 a.m. sharp along the two mile stretch of the beach.

Join military and civilian employees plus other volunteers, as they spend the morning picking up trash and debris along the Silver Strand.  Help make a difference in the community and the environment.

Latex gloves and trash bags will be provided to all volunteers. It is recommended that you bring your own gloves if you have a latex allergy. Parking is available at the YMCA Camp Surf, located adjacent to the entrance of the Silver Strand Training Complex at 510 SILVER STRAND BLVD, IMPERIAL BEACH, CA 91932.

Coronado City Council Gives A Thumbs Up To New Arts Commission

 

The Coronado City Council voted 5-0 yesterday to form a seven-member Coronado Cultural Arts Commission. More details will be forthcoming as they are announced.

What Did You Do With Your Perishable Food After the Blackout?

 

The message from the County’s Public Health Officer after the blackout was, “When in doubt, throw it out.” But did you get rid of the food in your refrigerator or did you eat it?

 

The County’s Health and Human Services Agency is conducting a brief survey, in English and Spanish, to determine what residents did with their food after the power went out.  Short English survey can be accessed here. La pequeña encuesta en español aquí.

 

According to the Food and Drug Administration, a refrigerator without power will keep food safely cold for about four hours if unopened, but the power was out in our region for up to 12 hours in some places. That means some of us had refrigerated food that was unsafe to eat. Did you eat it anyway? If so, did you get sick?

 

“The purpose of this survey is to better understand the food handling practices of San Diego County residents in blackout situations and to assess whether residents experienced subsequent gastrointestinal illness,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County Public Health Officer. “Widespread exposure to unsafe food could have occurred as past studies have found that food safety behaviors are not routinely practiced.”

 

A previous study found that only 33% of respondents knew to discard meat, poultry, milk, eggs, and deli items after four hours without power.

 

“The results will identify safety practices that are not followed and will highlight critical food safety messages that need to be conveyed to the public,” Wooten concluded.

Coronado Common Sense spotlights Jeff Marx, a thirty-year-old race car driver who participated in this year's "Race-At-The-Base" at North Island:

Jeff Marx was the driver for Coronado Councilwoman Barbara Denny. Here are Jeff and Barbara at the SpeedFest parade start on North Island in Jeff's Mercedes race car.

 

The Marx family owns and operates a Mercedes vehicle maintenance and repair shop in Costa Mesa.  They are here for the SpeedFest "Race at the Base" on NASNI this weekend.  The Marx family drove two of about 40 cars in the SpeedFest parade today.  Jeff, a thirty-year-old race car driver, owns ten vehicles.  His favorite is his first car—a Ford Mustang.

Two Missiles To Be Detonated Off California Coast

 

"The Navy isn’t giving out exact information about when they will blow up two missiles that were ditched in the Pacific August 30, only that it will be sometime between September 26-28. 

 

A Navy helicopter crew was transporting two Sea Sparrow, medium-range, surface-to-air missiles to the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard late last month when things went awry."

Channel 10 News had this to report on the missiles:

 

"Military officials said the missiles are 60 feet below the surface.The U.S. Coast Guard will enforce a security zone within a 2,000 yard radius of the missiles, and C-4 explosives will be used in the underwater detonation. The force of the blast may be visible from land."
