CCS Mission Statement

  • Our mission is to inform Coronado citizens of community issues they may not have heard about, to stimulate conversation and to allow Coronado citizens a “voice” to speak with through a response comment to an article or a “Letter to the Editor.”
  • This is a community “hands-on” newspaper that allows citizens to participate at will. We hope that you will enjoy it and share it with friends and family in the Coronado community.

I'm sorry, what about this blog is "common"? Your top link in your Common Sense FYI section is Councilwoman Denny's website; this article, while purportedly about a really great fundraiser, seems very focused on Ms. Denny (who's in every picture; I'm surprised she's not in the SWAT video); and while I haven't read all the letters to you, I have yet to find any which refer to the rest of the City Council or the Mayer in positive terms.

Politics includes grandstanding, of course. It also involves the ability to work with others. And Ms. Denny's approach to her job (including the discussion at the 16 August Council meeting) shows that she is not doing her job, she's auditioning for Mayor. The language she uses about the court case, and about the Mayor and other Council members, shows she really could care less about the putative "issue" at hand.

More to the point, the way she went about bringing the issue up was so combative that her fellow council members wouldn't even second her motion. How is that a success? Unless, of course, her objective is to build a library of sound bites ("I have zero-tolerance for wasting taxpayer money"), or to build a spinnable story about how she "tried" to get the rest of the Council to look at this issue, but they don't care about taxpayer money. If Ms. Denny really cares about me as a taxpayer, why can't she get results measurable in dollars rather than sound bites?

Please try for objectivity on this blog - it's a great premise, but (starting with your VERY FIRST article in 2008 - an interview with Barbara Denny) it looks like you're more of a mouthpiece than a news source.

Personally I enjoy this blog. I am a Coronado resident who loves seeing pictures and reading up on things around the community. I don't find the blog biased, but either way, it's someone's blog. They can do what they want with it. Don't read if you don't like it. In fact, make your own blog instead of complaining. :)

Dear Partisanship stinks—

Thanks for voicing your concerns. Let me try to address them.

The top link in Common Sense FYI is Ms. Denny's website because the sites are listed alphabetically by the blogging service.

As for the very first post on Coronado Common Sense, it was a quote from Abraham Lincoln — "I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crises. The great point is to bring them the real facts." It was purposely chosen. I try to research my facts so that they are as accurate as humanly possible and most often include the link. It is up to the reader to use those facts to make their own decisions. If you don't agree and wish to correct my information with solid fact, then I am always happy to make corrections. If the post contains a personal opinion, I will always tell you that.

The very first article in CCS was about Coronado Candidates running for Mayor and Council and was posted on August 23rd, 2008. It was followed on August 25th by "About The Candidates" and another about "Political Sign Regulations."

Looking for additional info on the candidates at that time, Ms. Denny was the only one that had a website listed on her political paperwork. So that is where I started and that is the article you referred to (posted on August 30th).

Back on September 27th, 2008, I received a comment much like yours in a letter written by Mayoral Candidate Tom Stickel. Here is part of my reply to Mr. Stickel: "The comment about me being unbalanced was of concern to me so I went back and checked the archives. To date, I have written one article each about Peter Jensen, council; Frank Tierney, mayor; Phil Monroe, mayor; Michael Woiwode, council; Pete Fagan, council; Tom Stickel, mayor; and Barbara Denny's husband. I now have campaign information and am preparing to write articles on Casey Tanaka, Tom Stickel and Barbara Denny. I would love to have information on Carrie Downey and Ledge Hakes and if those candidates would like to provide some then I will gladly publish it."

Though written nearly three years ago, the story is much the same. Readers are constantly sending in information for stories along with photographs, and Ms. Denny is sometimes in the photographs. The woman is active in the Coronado community. Everyone is welcome to send in their articles and I will gladly publish them. As for Ms. Denny being in the photos of the Law Enforcement Night, she was obviously present as were our fine Coronado Police Department. Regarding the comment about the S.W.A.T. Team video, I'm not so sure that Ms. Denny is not somewhere to be found in there!

Hope you have an enjoyable evening! Best—

I read Coronado Common Sense because it IS unbiased and actually lets you know whats going on in Coronado . . . right away! I tell everyone about it. It's great and so are you Susan.
