Here are some highlights from Blair King's City Manager Weekly Update of May 27th, 2011:
"Coronado Beach Recognition: The June issue of Parent Magazine surveyed more than 1,000 beaches and designated Coronado’s Central Beach as the 4th Best Beach for Families in the U.S.
Also, Dr. Stephan Leatherman, Director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for Coastal Research, and known as Dr. Beach, released his 21st annual report of Top 10 Beaches in the U.S. Coronado Beach was the second best beach in the country on Dr. Beach's list.
Pre-Audit Meeting: This week the Council’s Audit Subcommittee, consisting of Councilmembers Woiwode and Denny, met with the City’s Auditor Richard Kikuchi, C.P.A., partner in the firm of Lance, Soll, Lunghard as part of the audit process. This was a pre-audit meeting to allow the subcommittee to ask questions and highlight any areas of concern.
Expanded Tennis at the Cays: With the concurrence of the Cays Homeowners Association, the Recreation Department’s tennis program will see an expansion at the five Cays tennis courts.
Cox to Provide Fiber Optic Service to North Island through Coronado: Cox Communications has informed the City that it intends to amend their State-granted Video Franchise to provide fiber optic service to North Island. They intend to install fiber in the City’s right-of-way through existing AT&T conduit.
Human Resources Manager: The City’s new Human Resources Manager Courtney Barrett started work on Monday, May 23.
Planning Commission: On Tuesday, the Commission held an Initial Study public hearing regarding the proposed installation of a new dock at 20 Sandpiper Strand.
Public Art: Coronado’s Public Art “Imagine Tent City” (next to the Glorietta Bay Marina support building) has been nominated for an Orchid Award from the San Diego Architectural Foundation, in a combined category of Public Art, Architecture, and History.
Tennis Center: The contractor installed the missing components for the restrooms and Recreation staff received training for the access control system. This will allow the restrooms to be opened for public use. The furniture has been arriving, with another shipment due next week.
Boat House/Club Room: The signed contract was received this week. A Notice to Proceed will be issued and a preconstruction meeting is scheduled for June 1.
Coronado Avenue Perforated Pipe Rehabilitation: The contractor continued removing sections of unsatisfactory liner from the storm drain pipe segment immediately to the west of Eighth Street. Removal is expected to last one more week.
Terrazzo Restoration: The contractor has begun grinding down the terrazzo to prepare for the final sealant. Work is anticipated to be completed next week.
Downtown Enhancement Repair: The contractor placed “No Parking” signs in a small portion of the parking lot outside the Naval Amphibious Base for a staging area. They will be pouring three sample panels of sidewalk on Tuesday in the staging area to best match the existing sidewalk along the 900-1100 blocks of Orange Avenue. Staff will inspect the color and workmanship of the panels after they have cured for two weeks. The actual sidewalk repair will not commence until after Labor Day to avoid disruption during the busy summer season.
Street Light Replacement Project: The contractor continues to install the remaining street lights.
2010 Firefighter of the Year: Fire Engineer Brian Wright has been selected as Coronado’s 2010 Firefighter of the Year for his many contributions to the department and the citizens of Coronado. Engineer Wright has been a member of the Apparatus Committee and has overseen the specification process and the delivery of the recent apparatus purchases. Based upon input from many Coronado Fire Department employees, the Fire Chief selected Brian for this well-deserved recognition. He will be formally recognized at an upcoming Coronado Chamber of Commerce event scheduled for July 27.
CERT: On Saturday, May 21, Fire Division Chief Mike Blood and five members of the Coronado CERT team participated in the annual disaster exercise held in Bonsall with approximately 300 CERT members from various areas around the County.
Incident Management Team Deployment: Fire Captain Jayson Summers deployed Thursday to Silver City, New Mexico with the San Diego All-Hazard Incident Management Team.
CoNA Meeting: The Library hosted a meeting of the Centennial of Naval Aviation event planners on Tuesday, May 24. While some of the major events have already been held, the commemoration will last throughout the year.
Class of 1950 Tour: The Coronado High School Class of 1950 will visit the Coronado Library on Saturday, May 28. Director Christian Esquevin will give a tour to the group and show them the many changes at the Library, including two major expansions, since they graduated in 1950.
Crime Stoppers Award: Detective Tom Adkins was honored on Thursday by the Crime Stoppers of San Diego County organization for exemplary work on several high profile crime cases last year.
Candidate Interviews: Candidates were interviewed on Monday and Tuesday for the Police Department’s two vacant Police Officer positions.
Glorietta Bay Park Construction: Parks staff has been redirecting the irrigation lines at Glorietta Bay Park in preparation for the construction of the new boathouse and clubroom. The playground equipment currently located in that area will be relocated within the park.
Pest Control: On Monday and Tuesday, a contractor will be spraying approximately 32 Tipuana trees throughout the City to control for psyllids. They will post no parking signs 24 hours before application and will treat the trees in the early morning hours.
In addition, on Tuesday, ‘No Parking’ signs will be posted on both sides of Guadalupe Avenue from Pomona Avenue to Glorietta Boulevard, so the contractor can spray approximately 45 Jacaranda trees for aphid control. The materials will be applied by licensed applicators in the morning hours to minimize public exposure.
Heal the Bay Grades County Beaches: Coronado’s beaches were rated as some of the cleanest in San Diego County by Heal the Bay, a non-profit, environmental group headquartered in Santa Monica.
Family Swim Times: Starting June 4, the pool will begin summer operations. Family swim times, starting at 1 p.m. each day, include five hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; seven hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and four hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
All-Staff Training: The Aquatics Center will be closed Thursday, June 2, for the annual all-staff training day; it will reopen the following day. Summer programs begin on Monday, June 6.
CPR/First Aide Training: Approximately 80 current and new Recreation staff, along with participants from Public Services, attended CPR/First Aid training this week."
