Yesterday morning I had the pleasure of assisting Coronado Firefighter Paramedic Chris Balke in teaching the fire suppression unit of the CERT training. This was the second class in a series of five. There will be one more series of 2011 CERT Classes beginning in mid-October.
This class teaches the students the seriousness of fire, how to access the situation and then respond. When the fire is above their ability level, they learn that the proper response is to call in the firefighters. They are also taught that after they have put a fire out, they should contact the fire department so it is assured there is no hidden fire threat in the rafters or wherever. And if a disaster is occurring and firefighters are unavailable, it is better to let it burn than to put oneself in danger.
At this point in the series, the students are each given a CERT helmet, goggles and gloves. They need to wear this equipment when working around fire.
Once they were properly attired, the class went outside for further instruction and to try their hand at using a fire extinguisher. The program teaches the use of the acronym PASS, which stands for Pull (the pin), Aim (at the base of the fire), Squeeze (the top handle) and Sweep (from side to side).
Firefighter Paramedic Chris Balke controlled the BullEx fire simulator machine remote and started the fires.
Then the students paired up to take a turn in putting out the fire, using the safety method taught in the class. They each got a turn in the front using the extinguisher and in the back directing the event and being the “eyes”.
Here is a photo of yesterday’s CERT class after all successfully extinguishing their fires.
