NAVAL BASE CORONADO, Calif., -- To ensure protection of sensitive natural resources, including species protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act, the California Department of Fish and Game Law Enforcement and Navy Security will begin patrolling Naval Base Coronado beaches to enforce laws aimed at protecting natural resources, starting May 27.
The California Least Tern and Western Snowy Plover are federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. They build nests on open beaches and are harmed when people or pets enter this habitat.
Naval Base Coronado requires leashed dogs and beachgoers to stay on wet sand close to the water's edge on beach areas adjacent to the Silver Strand Training Complex-South, which is south of Silver Strand State Beach. Navy training beaches north of the Silver Strand State Beach are off-limits to the public.
The enforcement will prohibit trespassing and enforce leash laws in support of the conservation and protection of plants and animals. Misdemeanor offenses are punishable with fines up to $1,000 and/or six months in jail.
