Here are a few of the items that City Manager Blair King mentioned in his Weekly Update on April 22, 2011:
"All Employee Staff Meeting: Approximately 100 employees attended the all employee staff meeting at noon on Thursday. The purpose of this meeting was to provide feedback and information to employees on City operations and topics of concern to employees. Topics covered included organizational review, budget and fiscal issues (including possible changes in PERS), and what’s happening around Coronado. Fabulous Raffle prizes were provided.
City Hall Awarded Trophy: City Hall won the trophy for “Best Municipal Grounds” at the Coronado Flower Show this past weekend. The trophy was presented to Councilmembers Mike Woiwode and Barbara Denny; after it has been engraved it will be placed on view in the lobby at City Hall.
New Human Resources Manager: The City has hired a new Human Resources Manager to fill the vacancy left by Jim Lynch. Courtney Barrett has accepted the position and will join the City of Coronado on May 23. Courtney has worked at the County of San Diego for over ten years in Human Resources Management positions. She is currently a Labor Relations Officer for the County and has an MBA from San Diego State University.
Building Division Activity: During the period of April 14 through 20, the Building Division issued 16 permits and conducted 109 inspections, including 13 final inspections. The total valuation on which building permits were based during this period is $755,295, including two new single family dwellings valued at $700,852.
Public Art: This week the Port of San Diego replaced the four wheels on 'My Bike,' the Urban Tree in Tidelands Park. The old wheels had cracked and were not spinning. The new wheels were built stronger and are now freely turning with the wind.
Tennis Center: The commissioning of the mechanical equipment began with a few minor items discovered for repair. The architect and consultants conducted a punch list for corrections, which the contractor began immediately to address. If the slight undulations of the pavers and loose rocks are removed, the construction fence will be removed this Friday. The building will remain closed until all corrections are made.
Coronado Avenue Perforated Pipe Rehabilitation: The contractor continued to grout the pipe connections within the manholes to reduce the amount of infiltration into the storm drain system.
Pump Station Lid Replacement: A new lid at the Transbay pump station was installed this week. In addition, the contractor returned to the Pine Street pump station to complete installation of emergency suction and discharge ports now that the concrete supporting the new
lid has cured. Construction will begin at the Green Turtle pump station next week, which is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.
Cays Pedestrian Ramps: The contractor removed the old pedestrian ramps at the intersection of Seventh and Pomona and completed minor punch list items throughout the Cays development. As a result, the project is nearly complete.
Terrazzo Restoration: Spectra Company has completed repairs to the terrazzo in front of the theater; they will finish the remaining work once work on the front exterior of the theater is finished. Staff requested that Spectra delay the cleaning and grinding of all the terrazzo (both
existing and new) until after all the construction is done to avoid any blemishes on the final product due to construction activities.
Friends of the Library Book Fair: The Friends Book Fair ran very smoothly through last weekend. Full crowds were in attendance for all three days beginning on Friday, April 15, with Sunday, April 17 being a daylong half-price sale. School teachers were offered books for free during the last hour of the Book Fair. Scores of Friends volunteers helped run the Fair, and the core team of Joan Sadorf, Roger Clapp, Barbara Anderson, Sharon Sherman, and Cynthia Aguirre managed the operations.
Security System Installation: Installation of an enhanced security system for City Hall and the Police Headquarters began this week. This project is funded by a grant provided by the State Homeland Security Program through the County Office of Emergency Services.
STARPAL Fundraiser: Police Chief Lou Scanlon represented the Coronado Police Department as a celebrity waiter at the annual STARPAL luncheon held Friday. This organization pairs law enforcement officers with underserved youth in the region through athletics and academic programs.
Distracted Driver Campaign: Coronado Officers participated in the Regional Distracted Driver Campaign again on Wednesday and Thursday. This was a follow-up to the statewide campaign in which the California Highway Patrol and the California Office of Traffic Safety targeted distracted drivers earlier in the month. The campaign was a zero tolerance enforcement safety effort, which specifically targeted people talking on their cell phones and/or texting while driving.
Flower Show: Another Flower Show was completed. Public Services staff appreciates the efforts made by the Floral Association and Raphael’s Party Rentals in cleaning up after the event. This week, the park received extra watering and was aerified in order to facilitate its way to recovery after the Flower Show foot traffic. The additional trash and recyclable materials generated from the Flower Show and Car Show included eight, 3-cubic-yard containers of trash and four, 3-cubic-yard containers of recyclable materials, as well as thousands of books that will be recycled.

The week’s activities included: a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, talent show, lunch with the Easter Bunny, Disney Day, Earth Day celebration, puppetry class, rock climbing, cooking, bunny hop races, flubber putty mixing, swimming, a forest ecology presentation, ping-pong, dodgeball, Easter egg hunts and a whole lot more. The last day of holiday camp is Monday, April 25. This is the last holiday camp of this school year.
Chill Out Holiday Camp: Seven teens participated in Chill Out Holiday Camp on Monday. The kids dyed eggs, decorated Easter cookies, played video games, board games and ping-pong, and watched a movie while enjoying pizza.
Babysitting Class: Eleven tweens learned how to diaper, feed and supervise babies and young children in the American Red Cross Babysitting Class that was held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in the Police Department’s community room.
Annual Pool Maintenance: The Aquatics center will be closed May 14–22 for annual maintenance and repairs in preparation for the summer months. Knorr will install the new SPSC unit on the competition pool pump motor, which will provide energy savings by ramping down the motor during low use times, specifically overnight.
Community Center: The Community Center Banquet room passed the San Diego County Health Inspection this past week with flying colors."
